Friday afternoon I wandered down to the local Apple store, trying to decide on an iPod model. I walked out with an 8 GB iPod Touch and I’ve been playing with it ever since. It’s pretty much the coolest thing since sliced bread, and when Apple upgrades the iPhone to 3G, I’ll stand in line to get one.

If you don’t know, the Touch is the non-phone version of the iPhone, and it comes in 8GB or 16GB models. It is an iPod, so it plays music, movies, and podcasts, but it also does much more. With built-in wi-fi and the Safari web browser, my touch has already become a simple second computer. I can use it to check and answer email, to browse the web, watch YouTube videos, and track notes.

One of the cool features of the Touch that I didn’t appreciate when I was playing with it at the Apple store is the clarity and brightness of the screen. You wouldn’t expect the 3.5″ screen to be useful for browsing web sites that aren’t “made for mobile” but it is. You can read ESPN, CNN, etc without difficulty, and the zoom and scrolling interface built into the touchscreen is really easy to use. I was surprised how easy it was for me to click on a tiny little link on a page with several links and have it interpret what I wanted correctly. I have big hands and thick fingers, so I had expected the interface to be clumsy for me, but it isn’t. In spite of my “ham hands”, I am still able to use the keyboard and touchscreen commands adeptly.

The biggest drawback I’ve experienced is the 8GB size of the storage in my Touch. I filled it quickly – a little bit too quickly, in fact. I’m going to take it back tomorrow and exchange it for the 16GB model.

One of the cool features of the Touch is Google maps, a separate app on the Touch that uses Googles mapping service – you can get directions using the Google maps application, and then after you leave your network they remain loaded in the application’s memory, so you can use it to get you there.

If you get a Touch or an iPhone, I highly recommend getting a protective cover for it. I got a black Agent18 cover that is tough and easy to use.

This may be remembered as the day I sold my soul to Apple. So be it. If you missed it, today Steve Jobs announced Apple’s entry into the ultra-portable laptop market, with a 13″ laptop that, for a mere $3k, has no moving parts, weighs less than 3 pounds, and is only about 3/4 of an inch thick.

I want it. Silver case. Beautiful screen. No optical drive. No network port. Solid state 64 GB hard drive. All wireless. To quote my favorite Subway commercial: “Hoo chee MAMA!”.

I’m completely sold, and I’m willing to sell out to get one… Want me to endorse agile stand-on-your-heads as the next logical step to agile standups (that would be a short meeting!)? I’m in. Just tell me my Macbook Air is in the mail and I’ll have my project team upside down tomorrow. Want me to bottle up that little bit of my soul I’ve been hanging on to for the last decade of my life in corporate IT and ship it off to you? If my Macbook Air is in the mail, all I need is a used baby food jar and you can spread my soul over toast. Want me to recant everything I’ve ever said or written about the Waterfall Methodology being the worst idea since my brother tested his homemade parachute with my three year old sister? Well, let’s not get carried away with ourselves there.

Want a free two-day course on Agile? No problem. Just promise me a Macbook Air with a solid state drive and I’m yours. Seriously.
